Jill Pottle - Color and Light in the Landscape

JANUARY 24

Jill Pottle

Color and Light in the Landscape

This demo by Jill pottle will focus on painting the landscape in oils and working fast with a limited palette. Jill will demonstrate how she works with a brightly colored underpainting to optimize colors by purposely leaving areas open, creating the illusion of depth. To maximize the freshness of the image, strong brush applications are used to indicate movement, forms, patterns and values. Jill will also present her understanding of the light source and gow to capture it in her images.

Color Relationships: Opening Your Eyes

As artists, designers, and makers of fine crafts, knowledge of how color relationships is invaluable for expressing your ideas. This demo will introduce the Josef Albers exercises for seeing how colors interact with one another. Albers developed this technique at Black Mountain College and went on to teach this course at Yale School of Art; his methods continue to be taught at art schools worldwide. Using simple materials: magazine scraps, glue, a straight edge, and a razor blade, together we will create examples of how one color can appear as two.

Monotype Transfer Drawing

Do you love the direct fluidity of drawing? This very simple method of transferring ink through the touch of a tool to the surface of the paper is full of expressive possibilities. Subtle, immediate, mark-making is the pleasure of this printing technique. This demonstration will highlight how to create a home registration system that makes it possible to use multiple color plates and create prints without a press. You don't have to know how to "draw" to make these monotypes -- just bring your curiosity and see what a line feels like.
