Strategies for Painting in Watercolor

Do you struggle with how to start a watercolor? Then this is the class for you! Bring in a sketch of an image you would like to paint; during the class Marla will help you analyze the design, strategize on the beginning steps, decide where to start painting, and in what order to approach the piece. By eliminating the intimation of starting a new piece, your confidence will grow and you'll feel freer to begin. Learning to observe light, shadow and values, as well as glazing techniques, are all part of this class experience.

Watercolor: Alive and Free

This popular class motivates students to reach beyond their
comfort zone and approach a painting with boldness and confidence.
You will learn how to paint any subject starting with a value study and
then simplify and design a good composition using these values.
Next, you will move into the exciting world of color and watercolor
techniques. Paul will support each subject with talks and demos as
well as individual support and a critique at the end of each day.

The Practice of Drawing and Painting

This class will enhance your skills in drawing which is the foundation of a good painting. Learn to observe with intention and look carefully as you draw and paint the endless textures and colors found in nature.
Students will use a photo to stimulate imagination and
memory and learn the art of acrylic or oil painting on
canvas to create naturalistic and atmospheric paintings.

Independent Painting Studio

Students work independently on either acrylic or oil paintings under the guidance of an experienced instructor. After conversations with Emily focusing on individual goals, and together developing a working plan to reach these goals, you will work at your own pace. This course will emphasize working from observation and photographs and a still life will be assembled and available for each studio class.

Spontaneous Watercolor

This class will teach you to paint in watercolor in a very loose spontaneous
"alla prima" method. This means a painting will be created ina quick, direct
approach. Learn how to simplify a scene and think in a more abstract way.
All types of subject matter will be explored including landscapes, interiors,
city scenes and figures. There will be individual attention and group critiques.
Tom's classes put fun and pleasure into painting your artistic vision.

Chinese Ink Painting and Calligraphy

Supplement and enrich your painting style by learning traditional Chinese ink painting. Through demonstrations and individual instruction, you will learn basic Chinese calligraphy brushwork. You will study and paint traditional Chinese painting themes such as the bamboo plant, the orchid, the plum blossom and the landscape. The nuances and techniques of watercolor and ink will be explored and demonstrated. Individual critique and group discussion are part of the class every week.

New Inspiration: Starting with a Photograph

Do you sometimes feel uninspired in your art? Are you wondering what to create and how to make it? Taking inspiration from Sue's own work and using your own photographs as a starting point, we will experiment with drawing, watercolor, acrylic, and collage to create original, new work. Participants will need to bring their own laptop and Photoshop software. (This class runs concurrently with Chinese Ink Painting.)

This fun and relaxed workshop will develop your confidence as a watercolor artist. Each class will begin with an hour demonstration emphasizing the basics and how to execute dynamic paintings whether portraits, figures, landscapes or florals. Some classes will offer 15 minute "no drawing allowed' paint-along sessions. There will be plenty of individual instruction and class critiques. Weather permitting, we will paint outdoors.

Creating Art From Self-Exploration: Honoring Process & Product

Reused and Fused: Wearable Art

Workshop participants will repurpose their own colorful plastic shopping bags (left over from the holidays) and learn the process of cutting, layering and fusing to create "ribbon" belts. Material destined to lay waste are now made cool for your waist!

Introduction to Japanese Woodblock Printing

The Japanese hanga woodblock printmaking tradition uses water without a press. This exciting workshop offers an introduction to the range of wonderful tools, techniques and materials involved in the process. Everyone completes a multi-color print and engages with aspects of design, carving and printing. Matt will share tricks and techniques that can be adapted to other art-making approaches. All experience levels are welcome in this lively and colorful printmaking weekend.
